    As the settlements, which followed the landing at Plymouth increased and spread, there was no organized military force for protection against the Indians. So-called "Train Bands" were formed in different settlements but these were only local volunteer companies and there was no joint action or centralized authority. Thus the subject of adequate military protection soon became a matter of serious consideration.

    The Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts held a wreath laying ceremony to honor Special operator HM1 - US Navy Seal Glen Doherty on 2 October 2016 at Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial in La Jolla, CA. Ex Navy Seal Doherty gave his life in Benghazi, Libya saving many Americans during a surprise attack on the US Embassy. The Company was led by CC BG Robert E. Welch, Jr.

Only the Swiss Guard and Honourable Artillery Company of London are older than the AHAC of Massachusetts.     The Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts is the oldest chartered military organization in the Western Hemisphere founded in 1638. Only the Swiss Guard and Honourable Artillery Company of London are older than the AHAC of Massachusetts. During the Fall Field Tour of Duty, October, 5, 2013 a wreath laying ceremony and presentation of a Medal of Honor flag by MOH recipient Capt. Thomas H. Hudner was held. In attendance was AHAC CC Francis J. Magaletta and Massachusetts Adjutant General L. Scott Rice.
